Suzani silk embroidery, origin Uzbekistan

The name 'Suzani' comes from the Persian word for needle.   It can be translated as 'needlework for usage'.  However, most of the collectors see the word 'Suzani' as synonymous with the fabulous embroideries from Uzbekistan, Central Asia.  Traditionally this embroidery work began at the birth of a daughter and continued, with the help of family and friends, until the bride's dowry was complete.

The embroidery threads are silk.  Two traditional stitches are used in a majority of the Suzanis:  primarily basma stitch, sometimes called Bukhara couching, and less often, chain stitch.  An unbelievable amount of time and care goes into the making of each piece.    Gracefull floral motifs dominate in Uzbek Suzani's,  as well as occasional fish and birds.   Often there are old traditional forms used as palmettes, rossettes and pomegranates.
